  30. The Innovation Zone

As Europe’s battery market enters a more constrained and cost-sensitive phase, OEM procurement strategies are evolving rapidly. Buyers are under increasing pressure to secure reliable supply, reduce costs and navigate a more complex global market — while remaining competitive against lower-cost supply chains, particularly in China.

This closed-door roundtable offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from European OEMs on how sourcing decisions are being made in practice, and what suppliers need to understand to remain competitive.

Held under Chatham House Rule, the session is designed to enable a more open and commercially focused discussion than is typically possible on stage.

    • How OEM procurement strategies are shifting — from security of supply to cost and competitiveness
    • What buyers are prioritising today — and what they are no longer willing to pay for
    • Where European suppliers are struggling to compete, and why
    • How Chinese supply chains are influencing pricing, contracts and decision-making
    • The role of long-term agreements, partnerships and localisation in securing supply
    • What OEMs need from suppliers to support scale, cost reduction and delivery

    Why attend?

    • Gain direct insight into how OEM buyers are making decisions today
    • Understand where Europe is losing competitiveness — and where opportunities remain
    • Hear perspectives that are not shared in open panel discussions
    • Engage in a smaller, senior-level setting focused on commercial realities

Day two opening remarks from Fastmarkets editorial.
  49. Europe set out to build a battery industry at speed. Projects were announced across the region, capital followed, and the direction was clear. Turning that into delivery at scale has proven more difficult.

In this candid conversation, ACC’s former CEO — drawing on more than 40 years in the automotive industry, from engineering at Renault through to leading manufacturing and supply chain, and ultimately building one of Europe’s first gigafactories — reflects on the realities of developing battery manufacturing in Europe.

This session will look directly at where progress has stalled, why so many gigafactory projects have failed to materialise, and what the industry may have underestimated in trying to scale. It will explore how demand is evolving in practice, where real opportunities remain, and what it takes to build supply that is both competitive and sustainable.
